Meet Our Founder
Most parents worry about what might happen if their child is stopped by police while driving.
The moment Carlton Vreen’s son drove off their driveway by himself for the first time, Carlton knew the added risks he would face for “driving while Black.”
An African American husband and father of four children, Carlton had been a victim of police overreaction and racial profiling. During one traffic stop, a police officer pointed his gun at him, and he thought he might lose his life simply for following commands to retrieve his information. In a separate incident, he was profiled at an airport rental car counter on his way to a prayer breakfast. He was humiliated and forced to be strip searched on the side of the highway with several police cars on the scene.
Carlton searched for something that would give him peace of mind regarding his son. He researched the protocol and systems law enforcement use during traffic stops. He explored how police feel about traffic stops and discovered that they have fears and concerns for their safety too.
He didn’t find peace of mind, so he decided to create the Make it Home Safe app to provide real-time remote identification and instant connection between citizens, police, and loved ones during traffic stops.
Together with his wife, Pamela, and their team, Carlton is working to implement Make it Home Safe in police departments and municipalities across the country so everyone can make it home safe from traffic stops.
