The most recent numbers from 2019 showed that Black drivers are three times more likely to be pulled over by police than white drivers in the city of Pittsburgh.
A Beaver County man turned his experience into an invention he hopes will diffuse a potentially dangerous situation.
Carlton Vreen created the “Make It Home Safe” app. The app takes the driver’s information and puts it directly into the officer’s hands.
Vreen said the app also automatically sends a message to your loved one to let them know the location where you have been pulled over.
Also, if you do not feel safe, the app has a one-button touch that will call 911 and has instant video recording.
The app may not reduce the frequency of traffic stops, but Vreen said it will reduce the chance such encounters will take a bad turn.
The “Make It Home Safe” app is free and in the app store. For the app to work, it has to be in the hands of both the driver and law enforcement. Vreen said he is working with departments across the region to make the app standard equipment for officers.
